1. Campgrounds
For those who love the great outdoors, wildlife, and a peaceful, budget-friendly escape:
Myakka State Forest Campground
โ No Hookups ๐ Very Quiet ๐ฆ Wildlife โฐ Short-Term Stays
If you’re looking to fully escape into nature, Myakka State Forest is the spot. We stayed here for a night and loved how peaceful and remote it feltโtucked far off the main roads down a dirt path, it was the perfect break from the busier RV parks. With only a handful of campsites spaced far apart, Flying A, Mangrove, and River, you get plenty of privacy, plus unbeatable stargazing since you’re away from city lights.
This is a dry camping experience, meaning no hookups and only porta-potties, so come prepared. But what it lacks in amenities, it makes up for in wildlifeโwe spotted a pack of wild pigs and deer on our drive in at night, and woke up to the sounds of turkeys and birds! Although located in Englewood, itโs just 15-20 minutes from downtown Punta Gorda. Myakka is a popular spot, so book early!
Location: 2000 S River Rd, Englewood, FL
Price: $8.85/night

Fred C. Babcock/Cecil M. Webb Wildlife Management Area

If you’re looking to immerse yourself in nature while still being within easy reach of town, Fred C. Babcock/Cecil M. Webb WMA is a great option. We camped here for two nights and loved how it felt like a true escape into the wild, with lakefront views, abundant birdlife, and peaceful sunrises and sunsets. This campground is only open for camping on weekends (Friday & Saturday nights) or during hunting season, so youโll want to plan accordingly.
Fred C. Babcock’s campground is free, aside from a $6 day-use fee per vehicle, making it the most affordable way to stay the night in Punta Gorda. While there are no water or power hookups, there are plenty of bathrooms, and each site includes a fire pit and picnic table. Despite being right next to I-75, which brings some road noise, itโs also just 15 minutes from downtown Punta Gorda, making it an accessible camping optionโand the most affordable at that!

๐ Why Punta Gorda is an RV Hotspot
Punta Gorda is a hotspot for RVers, offering waterfront views of Charlotte Harbor, pleasant winter weather, and easy access to nearby nature preserves and citiesโCharlotte Harbor Preserve State Park (10 minutes south), Fort Myers (40 minutes south), and Sarasota (1 hour north).
Nestled along Charlotte Harbor, itโs become a haven for boaters, golfers, and travelers just generally looking for a sunny winter haven! And with nearby beaches like Boca Grande and Englewood Beach under an hour away, youโre just a short drive away from a beach day, without paying beach town prices.

๐ค๏ธ Best Time to Visit Punta Gorda
Weather-wise, the best time to visit Punta Gorda is November to April, Punta Gordaโs peak season, when the weather is mild and pleasant for outdoor activities. This is what you should expect:
- RV parks and campgrounds fill up fast
- Rates tend to be higher
- Downtown Punta Gorda is more crowded
- Youโll need to book early to secure your spot (3+ months in advance minimum)
We visited in January, and the weather was ideal for boating, hiking, and festivals like the Chili Fest. But, we would have had some trouble booking RV Parks if we were staying anywhere other than campgrounds.
May to October, the off-season, brings hotter temperatures, humidity, and afternoon storms, but lower RV park rates and more availability. If you donโt mind the heat, itโs a quieter and more affordable time to visitโjust be ready for Florida’s hot summer weather!
๐ Getting to Punta Gorda

If youโre spending your nights further away and need to drive into the downtown, we found this Public Parking Garage as well as parking by Gilchrist Park at Lot A, Lot B, and Lot C.
