1. Campgrounds

For those who love the great outdoors, wildlife, and a peaceful, budget-friendly escape:

Myakka State Forest Campground

โŒ No Hookups ๐Ÿ”‡ Very Quiet ๐Ÿฆƒ Wildlife โฐ Short-Term Stays

If you’re looking to fully escape into nature, Myakka State Forest is the spot. We stayed here for a night and loved how peaceful and remote it feltโ€”tucked far off the main roads down a dirt path, it was the perfect break from the busier RV parks. With only a handful of campsites spaced far apart, Flying A, Mangrove, and River, you get plenty of privacy, plus unbeatable stargazing since you’re away from city lights.

This is a dry camping experience, meaning no hookups and only porta-potties, so come prepared. But what it lacks in amenities, it makes up for in wildlifeโ€”we spotted a pack of wild pigs and deer on our drive in at night, and woke up to the sounds of turkeys and birds! Although located in Englewood, itโ€™s just 15-20 minutes from downtown Punta Gorda. Myakka is a popular spot, so book early!

Location: 2000 S River Rd, Englewood, FL
Price: $8.85/night
Reservations: Online or call (941) 460-1333

Fred C. Babcock/Cecil M. Webb Wildlife Management Area

โŒ No Hookups ๐Ÿ›ถ Lakefront Views โฐ Short-Term Stays ๐Ÿ’ฐ Free Campground ($6 Vehicle Entrance Fee)

If you’re looking to immerse yourself in nature while still being within easy reach of town, Fred C. Babcock/Cecil M. Webb WMA is a great option. We camped here for two nights and loved how it felt like a true escape into the wild, with lakefront views, abundant birdlife, and peaceful sunrises and sunsets. This campground is only open for camping on weekends (Friday & Saturday nights) or during hunting season, so youโ€™ll want to plan accordingly.

Fred C. Babcock’s campground is free, aside from a $6 day-use fee per vehicle, making it the most affordable way to stay the night in Punta Gorda. While there are no water or power hookups, there are plenty of bathrooms, and each site includes a fire pit and picnic table. Despite being right next to I-75, which brings some road noise, itโ€™s also just 15 minutes from downtown Punta Gorda, making it an accessible camping optionโ€”and the most affordable at that!

Location: 29200 Tuckers Grade, Punta Gorda, FL
Price: Free, aside from $6 vehicle fee
Reservations: No Reservations Necessary

๐ŸŒค๏ธ Best Time to Visit Punta Gorda

Google Weather Averages of Punta Gorda

Weather-wise, the best time to visit Punta Gorda is November to April, Punta Gordaโ€™s peak season, when the weather is mild and pleasant for outdoor activities. This is what you should expect:

  • RV parks and campgrounds fill up fast
  • Rates tend to be higher
  • Downtown Punta Gorda is more crowded
  • Youโ€™ll need to book early to secure your spot (3+ months in advance minimum)

We visited in January, and the weather was ideal for boating, hiking, and festivals like the Chili Fest. But, we would have had some trouble booking RV Parks if we were staying anywhere other than campgrounds.

Jen at Punta Gorda’s Chilifest in January

May to October, the off-season, brings hotter temperatures, humidity, and afternoon storms, but lower RV park rates and more availability. If you donโ€™t mind the heat, itโ€™s a quieter and more affordable time to visitโ€”just be ready for Florida’s hot summer weather!

๐Ÿš— Getting to Punta Gorda

Punta Gorda is easily reachable via I-75. Throughout the town, we saw plenty of parking available downtown and at local attractions. If youโ€™re spending your nights further away and need to drive into the downtown, we found this Public Parking Garage as well as parking by Gilchrist Park at Lot A, Lot B, and Lot C.

๐Ÿฅพ What to Pack for Your Punta Gorda RV Trip

  1. Strong bug spray – Depending on the area, bugs can be brutal in South Florida, bug spray is essential!
  2. Sunscreen – Sun protection is a must!
  3. Wide-brimmed hat โ€“ As part of sun safety, we love pairing sunscreen with wide-brimmed hats.
  4. Water-friendly clothes if youโ€™re planning on kayaking.
  5. Long-sleeve sun shirt โ€“ Elliotโ€™s favorite long-sleeve sun shirt and Jenโ€™s favorite long-sleeve sun shirt.

After filming our YouTube series on Carlsbad Caverns NP and White Sands NP we had to spend one day in the park and just catch up on work.

It was a little warm, but randomly running up the sand hills throughout the day was so worth it.

And 2 seconds later, Summit was dirty again ๐Ÿ˜… And 2 seconds later, Summit was dirty again ๐Ÿ˜…

As two East Coasters, deserts are so strange and wonderful. Both barren and full of life.

We stayed on our first BLM outside of Carlsbad, NM, and we were greeted with something entirely new for usโ€ฆ a dust storm!

We hadnโ€™t washed Summit since being on the road, but that was the trigger for a deep clean. Coming from boat life, weโ€™d just wash Pivot at various marinas.

Now we go to car washes! I have to admit, that I was not really looking forward to the chore of washing Summit, but the feeling of a clean home was super worth it. With some good tunes, it was actually pretty fun!

Donโ€™t Miss this Ranger-Led Tour โ€ผ๏ธ When we Donโ€™t Miss this Ranger-Led Tour โ€ผ๏ธ

When we went to Carlsbad Caverns this April, we were shocked to learn they restarted ONE tour.

If you didnโ€™t know, Carlsbad Caverns lost roughly half its front-facing staff with the NPS cuts. Due to this, they were forced to cancel all their ranger-led tours and just focus on keeping the park running.

The park service desperately wanted to open a tour to help educate small groups about the parkโ€™s history, challenges, and wonders, hoping those people would then share why our parks are so important to keep open. Theyโ€™ve found a way to stabilize and open one tour.

The Kingโ€™s Palace tour visits scenic rooms closed to the public, so youโ€™ll visit places very few people can see.

With this being said, every day is different, and as of now, they donโ€™t know in advance if they will be offering the tour, so youโ€™ll have to show up early regardless.

The visitors center opens at 9:00 am, so we sat outside since 8:00 am, ensuring we could get a spot.

The other people who had heard of the tour started arriving at 8:15, and by 8:30, there was a decent line outside. If you want tickets, arrive by 8:30 am at the latest!

You donโ€™t need a timed entry as the tour will count for your entry. The tour is $10 USD per person, on top of standard park entry fees.

The Kingโ€™s Palace tour starts at 10:30 am, so youโ€™ll need to take the elevator down, and then youโ€™ll have a few minutes to wander before the tour.

The tour lasts about 1:30 to 2 hours, so come fed and with plenty of time to learn about the Caverns!

Let us know in the comments if you have any questions or have seen anything different in recent days. Huge kudos to the NPS for navigating these challenging times.

Follow @schoandjo as we visit all 63 US National Parks, this is park number 7!
