And at just a 90-minute drive from Austin and San Antonio, it makes the perfect day trip. 1. Hop on a Narrated Trolley Tour

One of the best ways to get acquainted with Fredericksburg is by hopping on a narrated trolley tour. Led by local guides who know the town inside and out, this 1 hour and 45-minute ride takes you past all of the sites that are standing symbols of Fredericksburgโ€™s German heritage to this day.

You’ll roll past Marktplatz, the townโ€™s historic central square, hear stories about Fredericksburgโ€™s famous Sunday Houses (tiny weekend homes built by 19th-century German settlers), and get an overview of the townโ€™s museums, historic buildings, and quirky architecture. It’s a great way to get the lay of the land before exploring on your own.

๐Ÿ” Prefer to explore on foot? The cityโ€™s Tourism Board offers a free self-led walking tour of the Historic District, which is packed with fascinating tidbits about the townโ€™s past.

Trolley Tour Meeting Point: 302 E Austin St, Fredericksburg, TX
Price: Starting at $41 per person
Hours: Daily at 11 am

2. Stroll Historic Main Street

With over 150 shops, restaurants, galleries, and more, a walk down Main Street (technically West Main Street) isnโ€™t just a way to get from point A to point Bโ€”itโ€™s an experience in itself. Hereโ€™s a rundown of everything we saw and did on Main Street:

๐ŸŒณ Marktplatz โ€“ This peaceful park in the heart of downtown offers picnic areas, play spaces, and public restrooms. The Vereins Kirche Museum, a replica of the old church, school, and town meeting place of the German settlers, is the most iconic building of the square, and possibly the entire town. If you’re visiting during the holidays, donโ€™t miss the Christmas tree lighting ceremony held here!

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Visit a Museum โ€“ Two of the largest museums in Fredericksburg are located right on Main Street, The National Museum of the Pacific War and the Pioneer Museum!

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Boutique Shopping โ€“ Main Street is packed with one-of-a-kind shops, from Texas-themed boutiques and handmade cowboy boots to local art galleries and even a specialty dog shop. Whether you’re on the hunt for a new hat, quirky souvenirs, or a sweet treat from the old-fashioned candy store, youโ€™ll find it here. Jen picked up some adorable local stickers to add to her collection.

Jen loved these locally-inspired stickers and picked up a few!

3. Tour Local Wineries along Wine Road 290

Fredericksburg sits in the heart of Texas Wine Country, and a drive along Wine Road 290 is the perfect way to experience it. With over 50 wineries in the area, thereโ€™s no shortage of places to sip, swirl, and soak in the Hill Country views. If youโ€™re not sure where to start, here are a few standout spots we found where you can go to sample individual glasses or sign up for tasting experiences:

๐Ÿ‡ Grape Creek Vineyards Fredericksburg โ€“ A Tuscan-inspired estate offering bold reds and crisp whites, with an exclusive members-only patio for a more intimate tasting experience.

๐Ÿฅ‚ Heath Sparkling Wines Tasting Room โ€“ Love bubbles? This is Texasโ€™ first winery dedicated solely to sparkling wines, with modern tasting rooms and curated food pairings.

๐Ÿฆ“ Safari Winery โ€“ A unique spot specializing in South African and Chilean wines, bringing international flavors to the Texas Hill Country.

๐Ÿš Want to skip the planning? Let someone else do the driving by booking a Boutique Winery Experience or hiring one of the many local wine shuttles. Itโ€™s a great way to visit wineries without worrying about reservations or transportation.

๐Ÿ‡ Did you know that Texas grapes saved European wine in the 19th Century?

Locations: Vary (see above)
Price: $12-18 per glass and $30-40 for tasting experiences on average
Hours: 11 am – 5:30 pm (Exact times vary between vineyards)

4. Taste Wine Downtown on the Urban Wine Trail

If youโ€™d prefer to stay in the downtown area, youโ€™re in luck! There are plenty of downtown wineries and tasting rooms where you can sample wines from local vineyards on the Urban Wine Trail. This trail is composed of over 10 downtown businesses that offer wine-sampling experiences and are well-versed in the offerings of the region.

We loved being able to look out at Main Street.

Below we’ve put together a map of all the downtown spots on Fredericksburg’s Urban Wine Trail. If you’re in town for a few days, and love wine, consider ticking off these local tasting rooms one by one!

5. Try Some German Food

Hands down our favorite experience in Fredericksburg was trying all the mouthwateringly good German eats! Even though the original German immigrants are long gone, the town is still home to plenty of authentic biergartens, bakeries, and restaurants serving up classic dishes from schnitzel to warm pretzels. Here are 6 German restaurants in Fredericksburg to have on your radar:

1. Fredericksburg Brewing Co.

Unique brewery where you can enjoy a solid German meal and beers on tap in their indoor Biergarten. We ordered a Harperโ€™s Ferry IPA to go while strolling down Main Street as public consumption is allowed downtown! If you’re also interested in a to-go order, head to their to-go room, where you can skip the dine-in line.

2. Ottoโ€™s German Bistro

Ottoโ€™s offers a modern take on traditional German cuisine, using fresh, locally sourced ingredients in a cozy bistro atmosphere. It’s a great option if youโ€™re looking for a more refined, modern restaurant with some truly high-quality ingredients. Open daily for lunch and dinner.

3. Der Lindenbaum Restaurant

Der Lindenbaum is a family-friendly spot offering authentic German classics like schnitzel, bratwurst, and homemade soups in a cozy interior. Open daily for lunch and dinner, closed on Mondays.

4. Auslander

Auslander has been a Fredericksburg favorite for over 20 years, serving up authentic German fare in a cozy beer hall. We tried the Jรคgerschnitzel and Rouladenโ€”both massive and easily shareable. The schnitzel was perfectly crunchy, topped with rich gravy, while the sidesโ€”red cabbage and warm potato saladโ€”had that comforting homemade taste. Service is quick, and the back porch is dog-friendly! Open for lunch and dinner, closed on Wednesdays.

5. Altdorf Biergarten

Altdorf Biergarten is a casual, dog-friendly biergarten serving German and Texan comfort food with plenty of outdoor seating on their shady outdoor patio. Great for tap beers and hearty German entrees and sandwiches. Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

6. Old German Bakery & Restaurant

If you’re craving a homey spot for breakfast or lunch, Old German Bakery & Restaurant serves up everything from potato pancakes to strudels to schnitzel, and more at fair prices. Open Friday to Tuesday from 7 am to 3 pm.

Old German Bakery and Restaurant is a favorite among locals in Fredericksburg!

6. Explore the National Museum of the Pacific War

Right in the heart of downtown, The National Museum of the Pacific War is a must-visit for military history buffs and curious visitors alike. Now the only museum dedicated to World War IIโ€™s Pacific campaign, this immersive 6-acre museum dives deep into the stories of those who served, with interactive exhibits, powerful artifacts, and even a life-sized combat zone reenactment.

For a peaceful contrast, donโ€™t miss stepping outside into the Japanese Garden of Peace. This beautifully designed Zen-style garden was gifted by Japan to the people of the US, symbolizing the friendship of the nations. Itโ€™s a quiet space for reflection, offering a serene escape after the museumโ€™s impactful exhibits.

Location: 311 E Austin St, Fredericksburg, TX
Price: $24 per adult (Discounts Available)
Hours: 9 am – 5 pm Wednesday to Monday (Closed Tuesdays)

7. Hike in the Enchanted Rock State Natural Area

Just 17 miles north of Fredericksburg, Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is home to a massive pink granite dome that rises 425 feet above the ground. Revered by Indigenous tribes for centuries, it was believed to hold mystical powersโ€”hence the name! We got to chat with the park superintendent, Doug, who shared insights on its unique geology and preservation efforts.

The unique pink tone of the granite here was breathtaking!

The parkโ€™s main attraction is the Summit Trail, a steep but rewarding 50-minute climb (about 45 flights of stairs) leading to breathtaking 360ยฐ views of the Texas Hill Country. Thereโ€™s even a small cave at the top for adventurous explorers! If youโ€™re hiking with a pup like us, note that dogs arenโ€™t allowed on the summit, but they are welcome on lower trails like the Loop Trail, which offers stunning scenery of its own.

Location: 16710 Ranch Rd 965, Fredericksburg, TX
Price: $8 per person (12 and under free)
Park Hours: 6:30 am – 8 pm Daily

8. Step Back in Time at the Pioneer Museum

The Pioneer Museum is an incredible deep dive into Fredericksburgโ€™s early days, showcasing how German settlers built their lives in Gillespie County. Spread across 10 restored buildings, this open-air museum transports you back over a century, with structures like a one-room schoolhouse, log cabin, Sunday house, bathhouse, barn, and moreโ€”each filled with artifacts that tell the story of frontier life.

We loved that the self-guided tour is narrated by descendants of the original German settlers, adding a special touch to the experience! Our ticket also granted us entry to the Vereins Kirche Museum in Marktplatz, the town square, which used to act as a church, meeting place, and even a school!

There were so many artifacts from the pioneer days to look at!

Location: 325 W Main St, Fredericksburg, TX

Hours: 10 am – 5 pm Monday to Saturday (Closed Sunday)

9. Explore Old Tunnel State Park

A hidden gem in Fredericksburg, Old Tunnel State Park is Texasโ€™ smallest state parkโ€”but donโ€™t let its size fool you. The park is home to an abandoned railroad tunnel, now serving as a summer roost for over 3 million Mexican free-tailed bats and 3,000 cave myotis bats from May 1st to October 31st. During these months, visitors have the option to stay after 5 PM to watch the bats emerge at sunset, but a ticket is required. You can reserve your spot online in advance.

โ„น๏ธ More information about special programs during Bat Season on the Texas Parks & Wildlife Page

Besides bat viewing, this peaceful park is known for picnicking, hiking, bird-watching, and even stargazing. The Old Tunnel State Park Trail is an easy 45-minute out-and-back hike we found that leads to the infamous tunnel. While bat sightings along the trail are possible, theyโ€™re not guaranteed, especially during the off-season. No dogs are allowed on this trail.

๐ŸŒค๏ธ Best Time of Year to go to Fredericksburg

In our opinion, Spring is hands-down the best time to visit Fredericksburg, with blooming wildflowers painting the landscape in April and May. The pleasant weather makes it ideal for exploring gardens, parks, and outdoor wineries without the Texas heat. But if youโ€™re more into German beer and lively celebrations, consider planning your trip around Oktoberfest (October 3-5) when the town comes alive with bratwurst, live music, and plenty of Texan Gemรผtlichkeit!

๐Ÿฆ‡ Donโ€™t forget about the Bat Season in Old Tunnel Park from May 1st to October 31st!

โฐ How Much Time Do You Need in Fredericksburg?

A weekend trip (2-3 days) is perfect for experiencing the best of Fredericksburg. This gives you enough time to explore Main Street, visit a few wineries, hike Enchanted Rock, and dive into the townโ€™s German history without feeling rushed. If you want to explore more of the Hill Country’s hidden gems, adding an extra day can afford you to visit surrounding towns such as Luckenbach. If you only have a day to spareโ€”donโ€™t fret! Below we’ve designed a 1-Day Itinerary for those on a time crunch.

๐Ÿ“ฐ 1-Day Itinerary to Fredericksburg, Texas

If we only had one day to explore Fredericksburg, hereโ€™s what we would do to make the most of our time:

  1. Start with a hearty breakfast at Old German Bakery & Restaurant for an authentic German meal.
  2. Hop on a Narrated Trolley Tour to get a feel for the town and learn about its rich German history.
  3. Stroll down Main Street, checking out the historic architecture and boutique shops. Stop at Marktplatz for photos and to rest your legs for a bit.
  4. Grab lunch at The Auslander for classic schnitzel and a stein of beer.
  5. After lunch, head out to Wine Road 290 and visit at least one wineryโ€”Grape Creek Vineyards is a great choice for first-timers.
  6. If you prefer nature over wine, opt for a hike up Enchanted Rock at Enchanted Rock.
  7. Enjoy a French-themed dinner at Vaudeville and if youโ€™re up for a nightcap, stop by 78624 The Bar for a creative cocktail and some live music.

๐Ÿจ Where to Stay in Fredericksburg

On our last trip to Fredericksburg, we stayed at a Nature Pod at SKYE Texas Hill Country Resort, and we can’t recommend them enough! Our stay was super comfortable, there was so much to do at the resort itself, and the stargazing at night was spectacular! If you’re looking for something more along the lines of a hotel or a simple campground, here’s what we recommend:

Hotels

  • $ Budget – Sunset Inn and Suites, 2-minute drive from Downtown Fredericksburg
  • $$ Moderate – Fredericksburg Inn and Suites, Downtown Fredericksburg
  • $$$ Luxury – Emigrantโ€™s Inn, Downtown Fredericksburg

๐Ÿ›๏ธ You can also check for vacation rentals through VRBO or Airbnb.

RV Parks & Campgrounds

  • SKYE Texas Hill Country Resort – A peaceful retreat in the heart of Texas Hill Country, offering RV spots, cabins, and Nature Pods (we stayed in a Nature Pod with water and electricity hookups). The resort features a pool, pickleball courts, stunning lake views, and amazing stargazing at night. Each site comes with its own firepit and chairs and firewood and ice are available at a self-serve pavilion. Check out our photos from our nature pod below!
  • Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park – Affordable municipal campground with RV and tent-camping sites 3 miles from downtown Fredericksburg. Lots of amenities within the parkโ€”tennis and pickleball courts, swimming pool, playgrounds, nature trails, etc.

๐Ÿš— Getting To Fredericksburg

  • Car โ€“ A 90-minute drive from Austin or San Antonio via U.S. Highway 290. Once in downtown Fredericksburg, we found plenty of free street parking on a majority of the roads.
  • Train โ€“ No direct serviceโ€”the nearest Amtrak stations are in Austin and San Antonio.
  • Bus โ€“ Greyhound bus stop at Stripes in Fredericksburg, or take a bus to Austin or San Antonio, then rent a car.
  • Plane โ€“ Fly into Austin (AUS) or San Antonio (SAT), then a 1.5-hour drive. Private planes can also land at Gillespie County Airport right in town.

๐Ÿ“ Jenโ€™s Urban Design Corner

Fredericksburg has a walkability score of 69/100, meaning itโ€™s fairly easy to explore on footโ€”at least in the downtown area. I found Main Street and its surroundings compact, pedestrian-friendly, and packed with shops, restaurants, and historic sites, making for a pleasant walking experience.

However, if you plan to visit wineries, Enchanted Rock, or other attractions outside downtown, having a car is essential. For those interested in wine tours, many local tour companies offer shuttles to take you to the outlying wineries.

As two East Coasters, deserts are so strange and wonderful. Both barren and full of life.

We stayed on our first BLM outside of Carlsbad, NM, and we were greeted with something entirely new for usโ€ฆ a dust storm!

We hadnโ€™t washed Summit since being on the road, but that was the trigger for a deep clean. Coming from boat life, weโ€™d just wash Pivot at various marinas.

Now we go to car washes! I have to admit, that I was not really looking forward to the chore of washing Summit, but the feeling of a clean home was super worth it. With some good tunes, it was actually pretty fun!

Donโ€™t Miss this Ranger-Led Tour โ€ผ๏ธ When we Donโ€™t Miss this Ranger-Led Tour โ€ผ๏ธ

When we went to Carlsbad Caverns this April, we were shocked to learn they restarted ONE tour.

If you didnโ€™t know, Carlsbad Caverns lost roughly half its front-facing staff with the NPS cuts. Due to this, they were forced to cancel all their ranger-led tours and just focus on keeping the park running.

The park service desperately wanted to open a tour to help educate small groups about the parkโ€™s history, challenges, and wonders, hoping those people would then share why our parks are so important to keep open. Theyโ€™ve found a way to stabilize and open one tour.

The Kingโ€™s Palace tour visits scenic rooms closed to the public, so youโ€™ll visit places very few people can see.

With this being said, every day is different, and as of now, they donโ€™t know in advance if they will be offering the tour, so youโ€™ll have to show up early regardless.

The visitors center opens at 9:00 am, so we sat outside since 8:00 am, ensuring we could get a spot.

The other people who had heard of the tour started arriving at 8:15, and by 8:30, there was a decent line outside. If you want tickets, arrive by 8:30 am at the latest!

You donโ€™t need a timed entry as the tour will count for your entry. The tour is $10 USD per person, on top of standard park entry fees.

The Kingโ€™s Palace tour starts at 10:30 am, so youโ€™ll need to take the elevator down, and then youโ€™ll have a few minutes to wander before the tour.

The tour lasts about 1:30 to 2 hours, so come fed and with plenty of time to learn about the Caverns!

Let us know in the comments if you have any questions or have seen anything different in recent days. Huge kudos to the NPS for navigating these challenging times.

Follow @schoandjo as we visit all 63 US National Parks, this is park number 7!
