Exploring Beaufort, South Carolina

Beaufort, South Carolina is worthy of the title of South’s Best Small Town. It has this unique combination of a restored waterfront and neighborhoods that have stood the test of time.

Beaufort marsh view

Beaufort is unique as much of its historic buildings remain unchanged. During the American Civil War, Beaufort was one of the first towns surrendered to the Union and thus much of the existing architecture remained.

An old Beaufort building

As we have been traveling by boat, one aspect of visiting new places has been lacking – and that is trying the local cuisine! Today however we check out Lowcountry Produce Market and Cafe and have a fantastic lunch, including homemade fresh doughnuts…

We’re Jen and Elliot, aka Scho and Jo, and we are happy to help plan your next Pivot! Sometimes we’re forced to make decisions, and sometimes we have time to plan them out, in all cases, Pivots are part of our lives and we’re better off embracing them rather than avoiding them!

Trent-Severn Waterway Day 3

This was one of our favorite days on the Trent-Severn and easily Elliot's favorite bakery along the entire loop. Nothing on Elliot's favorites along the Great Loop list compares to the cream-filled glazed donuts at Dooher's Bakery in Campbellford, Ontario. Thankfully there's a park with walking trails nearby to work off some of the calories from those delicious donuts.

The Trent-Severn is a 240-mile (386 km) waterway that connects Trent to Severn or Lake Ontario to Lake Huron. It cuts through some incredibly beautiful parts of Canada’s cottage country through a series of 44 locks. The names for many of the places along the Trent-Severn originate from the First Nation Anishinaabe, including “Otonabee” (also known as Odenabe), which means “river that beats like a heart.”

Unlike the Erie Canal, the Trent-Severn Waterway is not free. A season pass is typically purchased at the first or last lock (depending upon your direction of travel) and is priced determined based on the length of your boat and if you plan on traveling one way or round trip. Our one-way lock pass cost CAD 5/foot which came out to about $132.27 USD. On the first day of our journey on the Trent-Severn Waterway, we traveled through 6 locks from Trenton to Frankford and enjoyed every second of it. Little did we know how much we would fall in love with this area over the next two weeks.

Leaving the Thousand Islands was sad because we weren’t sure if the rest of Canada would be as good as it was in the Thousand Islands. Spoiler alert: it was.

Leaving the Thousands Islands National Park, we headed to Kingston, Ontario. Kingston was everything we were craving. We took two days to catch up on work, plan our next few days on the Great Loop, and do a food tour around the city. Kingston was a hub of diversity with a variety of foods from around the world so our food tour included some of our favorite international dishes as well as some Canadian classics like poutine! Being in Kingston, gave us life and so much enthusiasm for what was to come! #greatloop
