What is Fernandina Beach, FL known for?

Fernandina Beach was the birthplace of the modern shrimping industry and the only U.S. city to have flown eight different national flags! This unique history is most visible in its well-preserved Victorian architecture, historic Fort Clinch State Park, and the annual Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival. Beyond historical offerings, downtown Fernandina Beach offers a plethora of modern amenities, from creative restaurants and Victorian-style hotels to well-kept beaches and pristine state parks. Letโ€™s kick things off by exploring some of the top things to do in Fernandina Beach!

๐Ÿงฆ Fun Fact: The New Adventures of Pippi Longstocking (1998) was filmed in Fernandina Beach!

We fall in love with Fernandina Beach a little bit more with every visit!

Our 5 Favorite Activities in Downtown Fernandina Beach

Fernandina Beach offers loads of exciting things to do, whether you’re looking for a relaxing beach getaway, a one-of-a-kind historical trip, or even a restaurant-filled foodie weekend. In this section, weโ€™ve outlined our top 5 must-do activities in and around downtown Fernandina Beach.

Centre Street is where you’ll find the top shops, restaurants, and bars in downtown Fernandina Beach!

1. Explore Downtown Fernandina Beach

A trip to Fernandina Beach isnโ€™t complete without exploring its historic downtown on foot! This has easily become our favorite way to spend an afternoon in Fernandinaโ€”especially when visiting with our dog, Ollie. Fernandina Beach historic district is full of beautifully preserved Victorian homes that house everything from boutique shops to hotels, and even some of the islandโ€™s best dining spots.

We recommend starting at the Amelia Island Welcome Center to grab a map and speak to the guides before setting out to explore. We found downtown Fernandina Beach to be very walkable, so we wouldn’t worry about finding transportation to make your way through the downtown.

3. Visit Downtown Fernandina Beachโ€™s Farmers Market on Saturday

Every Saturday, rain or shine, the Fernandina Beach Farmerโ€™s Market on Centre Street comes to life. Here, youโ€™ll find local vendors selling fresh produce, artisan goods, and handmade crafts. On our visit, a local band was playing live music, something we donโ€™t always see at farmerโ€™s markets! Ther Fernandina Beach Farmer’s Market is one of our favorite that we’ve seen on our travels.

No matter where we travel, farmersโ€™ markets have become one of our favorite activities. They allow us to support local artisans, meet some locals, and pick up gifts for family and friends all in one spot! More information and updates about Fernandina Beachโ€™s farmers market can be found on their website.

4. Relax at Main Beach Park

You canโ€™t come to Amelia Island without spending time by the water! Head to Main Beach Park, or another nearby beach, to enjoy soft sand, ocean breezes, and plenty of space to relax.

Nearby restaurants like Salt Life Food Shack serve fresh seafood and have outdoor seating, making for a fantastic beachside lunch experience!

Further down the island, you have even more beach options like American Beach, a historic beach in African American history, Peters Point Beachfront Park, and Seaside Park Beach.

Annual Festivals in Fernandina Beach

Fernandina Beach loves its festivals, so make sure you know whatโ€™s going on when youโ€™re in town! Amelia Island frequently updates its Events Page with the latest info on local events each month. Here are three festivals that caught our eye:

  • The Right Whale Festival is a free annual festival held every November that celebrates the return of the endangered North Atlantic right whales to the warm waters of Georgia and Florida. We had a blast at this festivalโ€”trying all the food, talking to conservation experts, enjoying the live music, and learning more about this incredible mammal!
We learned so much about whales at this festival!
There were tons of things to touch and look at!
  • Les DeMerle Amelia Island Jazz Festival is an annual jazz music festival held for a week from late September to early October. Here, you can enjoy daily concerts in various locals throughout Amelia Island, some require tickets.
  • The Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival is a huge annual pirate-themed festival held in Fernandina Beach every May with food, music, and activities from dawn to dusk! Best part? Itโ€™s 100% free to attend!

What is the difference between Amelia Island and Fernandina Beach?

Amelia Island is the name of the whole 13-mile barrier island in Northeast Florida, while Fernandina Beach is the historic town on its northern end. Think of Amelia Island as the bigger destination with beaches, resorts, and nature, and downtown Fernandina Beach in particular as its charming, small-town heart full of history, shops, and great restaurants.

What is the best month to visit Amelia Island?

Google Weather Annual Temperature Averages in Fernandina Beach

The best month to visit Amelia Island depends on what youโ€™re looking for, but spring is a standout. From March to May, the weather is warm but not too hot, making it perfect for beach days, outdoor activities, and exploring downtown Fernandina Beach. Spring also brings events like the Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival in May. If youโ€™re looking for fewer crowds and mild weather, fall (September to November) is another great option, with the bonus of stunning sunsets, quiet beaches, and the Right Whale Festival in November. Since Amelia Island is located on the ocean, it gets a decent breeze, making it cooler than mainland Florida.

How much time do you need in Fernandina Beach?

You can enjoy the highlights of Fernandina Beach in 1-2 days, perfect for exploring the historic downtown, dining at local restaurants, and visiting Fort Clinch State Park. However, if you have 3-4 days, you can afford to take your time relaxing on the beach, using a full day to hike or bike a local trail, or even exploring the greater Amelia Island.

We usually visit Fernandina Beach for 1-2 days, but there’s enough to see in surrounding areas to extend your trip to 3-4 days!

Boaterโ€™s Guide to Fernandina Beach

While living on our boat and traveling around Americaโ€™s Great Loop, we learned a thing or two about boating. One of the main takeaways was to always have a game plan. Although we didnโ€™t dock in Fernandina Beach during our Great Loop, we did anchor here. We’ve compiled all the information to make it easy for boaters to enjoy their stay, including anchorage, marina docks, provisioning, and more.

A sailboat traveling north on the ICW near Amelia Island.

How to Approach

Approaching Fernandina Beach by boat is a breeze, thanks to its convenient location along the Intracoastal Waterway and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. Boaters can enter the ICW from the Atlantic Ocean at the northern end of Amelia Island, the southern end, or travel along the protected waters of the Intracoastal Waterway.

The majority of boaters enter into St. Maryโ€™s Entrance from the ocean, just by Fort Clinch State Park, and then turn South into the Amelia River. The channel is deep as it is used by commercial shipping vessels, and submarines are often spotted entering as it is near the Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay just north in Georgia.

You know you’ve reached Fernandina Beach when you see this marina!

This area of Florida is known for large tidal swings of about 6-8 feet, with greater tidal changes during king tides. The large tidal changes also mean a strong current. When anchoring, it’s important to be mindful of the tidal change and account for it where you choose to anchor and how much chain you’re laying out. When docking, it’s important to dock into the current for best control of your boat or during slack tide.

Where to Dock

Oasis Marina at Fernandina Harbor is the closest marina to downtown Fernandina Beach. They are known for their well-maintained facilities, knowledgeable staff, and overall efficiency. Tiger Point Marina is a bit further north on Amelia Island, a great second option if youโ€™re looking to explore Fort Clinch State Park.

Where to Anchor

If youโ€™re looking to anchor, there are several anchorages up and down Amelia River, such as this Fernandina Beach Anchorage. We stayed in this anchorage in April 2021 and had a good experience. The anchorage symbol is near the mooring ball field associated with Oasis Marinas. We anchored just south of the mooring field and paid a daily use fee to take our dinghy to shore. We recommend checking Waterway Guide for reviews and additional information about anchorages.

Provisioning

  • Saturdayโ€™s Farmers Market from 9 am – 1 pm, conveniently located downtown
  • Winn-Dixie a 13-minute bike ride down Amelia Island
  • Walmart right by Winn-Dixie

Wifi

  • Nassau County Public Library – Fernandina Beach Branch – Quiet public library located right in downtown Fernandina Beach.
  • Amelia Island Coffee – Quaint little coffee shop with friendly workers where you can easily get some work done with your order.
  • Mocama Coffee – Another cozy coffee shop a bit further down the island with fast wifi and delicious coffee!

After filming our YouTube series on Carlsbad Caverns NP and White Sands NP we had to spend one day in the park and just catch up on work.

It was a little warm, but randomly running up the sand hills throughout the day was so worth it.

Itโ€™s l moments like these that were so grateful to live and work out of our van.

And 2 seconds later, Summit was dirty again ๐Ÿ˜… And 2 seconds later, Summit was dirty again ๐Ÿ˜…

As two East Coasters, deserts are so strange and wonderful. Both barren and full of life.

We stayed on our first BLM outside of Carlsbad, NM, and we were greeted with something entirely new for usโ€ฆ a dust storm!

We hadnโ€™t washed Summit since being on the road, but that was the trigger for a deep clean. Coming from boat life, weโ€™d just wash Pivot at various marinas.

Now we go to car washes! I have to admit, that I was not really looking forward to the chore of washing Summit, but the feeling of a clean home was super worth it. With some good tunes, it was actually pretty fun!

Donโ€™t Miss this Ranger-Led Tour โ€ผ๏ธ When we Donโ€™t Miss this Ranger-Led Tour โ€ผ๏ธ

When we went to Carlsbad Caverns this April, we were shocked to learn they restarted ONE tour.

If you didnโ€™t know, Carlsbad Caverns lost roughly half its front-facing staff with the NPS cuts. Due to this, they were forced to cancel all their ranger-led tours and just focus on keeping the park running.

The park service desperately wanted to open a tour to help educate small groups about the parkโ€™s history, challenges, and wonders, hoping those people would then share why our parks are so important to keep open. Theyโ€™ve found a way to stabilize and open one tour.

The Kingโ€™s Palace tour visits scenic rooms closed to the public, so youโ€™ll visit places very few people can see.

With this being said, every day is different, and as of now, they donโ€™t know in advance if they will be offering the tour, so youโ€™ll have to show up early regardless.

The visitors center opens at 9:00 am, so we sat outside since 8:00 am, ensuring we could get a spot.

The other people who had heard of the tour started arriving at 8:15, and by 8:30, there was a decent line outside. If you want tickets, arrive by 8:30 am at the latest!

You donโ€™t need a timed entry as the tour will count for your entry. The tour is $10 USD per person, on top of standard park entry fees.

The Kingโ€™s Palace tour starts at 10:30 am, so youโ€™ll need to take the elevator down, and then youโ€™ll have a few minutes to wander before the tour.

The tour lasts about 1:30 to 2 hours, so come fed and with plenty of time to learn about the Caverns!

Let us know in the comments if you have any questions or have seen anything different in recent days. Huge kudos to the NPS for navigating these challenging times.

Follow @schoandjo as we visit all 63 US National Parks, this is park number 7!
